The neurological visual system is often referred to as the operating system of the brain. Any computer must have a master program that operates how information is processed and the visual system interconnects to every part of the brain.

As learning takes place through the developing years, Vision emerges as the dominate information processor, and then can substitute for all the senses as explained with the 4 L's of Learning. If you want to recall the smell of a flower, you can close your eyes and create the sense of smell seeing the object in your minds 'eye', and the same applies to touching, tasting and smelling mentally. If you want to recall some event in your life it is normally processed through the visual system first.

Building on the development of the 4 L's vision begins to evolve. Even to know how to move in a directed basis is integrated with vision to ultimately send the appropriate signals to the motor system to react and move as directed. With sports we often don't think of vision as what is actually hitting the ball but just try and hit a ball thrown to you with your eyes closed if you have not seen the pitch. Knowing where we are in space comes from our proprioception, which first interconnects raw eyesight signal to higher level centers of the brain to transefer to the motor system to send the appropiate signals to the actual muscles to move.

With vision becoming the dominant sense, you also must remember that the inherent design of brain and vision, is for survival. It was never designed for reading and close demanding tasks but for an agrarian society where outdoors, fishing, and hunting were a way of life. The visual system was designed for flexibility. The overload of near stress work, at best is under adverse conditions of artificial lighting and stress of sitting still for long periods of time ie: as in a desk at school to study for 50 minutes at a time per class and 6-8 hours a day, or computer use.
